Blue canoe is an old, robust craft built on the shores of the mighty Fraser River (or at least in our youth we thought it was mighty) within sight of Vancouver and the Pacific Ocean. Blue canoe has spent most of its life "on the other side of the mountains" in the waters of beautiful Barriere Lake. One can imagine blue canoe has had a yearning through its life to venture out into new and challenging waters but, for any number of reasons, has been held back. There is speculation on Rod's part that blue canoe dreamed of the adventures of the little canoe in the favourite children's story "Paddle-to-the-Sea".
Blue canoe could be intimidated by the newer generations of canoes whose designers claim their innovations and materials are far superior to the old clunker models. But why be intimidated if you are seaworthy and have a strong keel. Who says adventure has to be the sole purview of the sleek, new, high tech models? Perhaps all you need is purpose, a few repairs, good paddles and the sense not to venture up a brown creek without them.
While the blue canoe can't physically move from its home waters, it can experience new adventures in spirit through its masters.
The blue canoe is the center of many family memories. It has carried us and the next generation on many trips up the river in search of beaver, moose, eagles and sockeye salmon. It will be there for our newest generation. Blue canoe is us, so it's a fitting namesake for this blog.
With familiar home waters like this, why would anyone want to venture into uncertain territory? And could it be that the much maligned pit privy and absence of power or services at Barriere were preparations for the next adventure? Hopefully through this blog we will discover some answers to those questions.
Be assured though that the words of the song Land of the Silver Birch still hold meaning for us ...
"Blue lake and rocky shore, I will return once more, ..."
